In 2024, Rwanda made remarkable advancements in standardization, reinforcing its commitment to quality and safety in products and services. Spearheaded by the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB), these initiatives have laid a robust foundation for socio-economic transformation, fostering both local and international partnerships. Here are the key highlights from a year filled with significant accomplishments.
1. Approval of Over 500 Standards
In 2024, Rwanda approved over 500 new standards, showcasing its dedication to maintaining high-quality benchmarks across various sectors. As RSB Director General stated, “These standards are essential for ensuring that our products and services meet international expectations.”
2. Certification of New Products
The RSB certified more than 200 new products with the S-Mark, while also re-certifying existing products. This certification plays a crucial role in establishing consumer trust and ensuring product safety and quality in the marketplace.
3. System Management Standards Certification
Rwandan companies achieved certification against several international management standards, including ISO 9001 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems), RS 184 (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), and ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management Systems). According to the International Organization for Standardization, “ISO standards provide a framework for organizations to improve their performance and enhance customer satisfaction.”
4. Certification of Persons
The RSB continued its efforts in the certification of individuals, including standards trainers and auditors. This initiative is vital for building a knowledgeable workforce capable of upholding and promoting high standards in Rwanda.
5. Introduction of Garage Certification
In a significant expansion of its services, RSB introduced the certification of garages, ensuring that automotive services meet recognized quality standards. This initiative is expected to enhance vehicle safety and service reliability across the nation.
6. Hosting the ISO Annual Meetings
In a landmark announcement, Rwanda was selected to host the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Annual Meetings at the Kigali Convention Centre from October 6-10, 2025. This prestigious event is a testament to Rwanda’s growing influence in the global standardization community.
7. Launch of the Helmet Testing Laboratory
In partnership with the FIA Foundation and other stakeholders, Rwanda launched the first Helmet Testing Laboratory on the African continent. This facility aims to improve road safety standards and reduce traffic-related injuries, aligning with global safety initiatives.
8. Capacity Building for Stakeholders
RSB conducted extensive capacity-building programs, including training and technical assistance for stakeholders. “Empowering our partners with the necessary skills and knowledge is essential for achieving our quality goals,” said an RSB official.
9. Awareness Campaigns
Throughout the year, RSB conducted awareness campaigns focused on various standards, including Gender Equality Standards, Air Quality Standards and fighting air pollution, Food Safety Standards, helmet standards and testing, promoting food safety through implementation of standards in the school feeding program. These initiatives aim to educate the public and promote adherence to safety and quality standards across all sectors.
10. Commitment to Internationally Accredited Services
The RSB maintained its focus on providing internationally accredited services, supporting “Made in Rwanda” products to effectively compete in regional and international markets. This strategic direction is crucial for enhancing the country’s economic presence.
11. Collaboration with KOICA
In a significant move, RSB signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to implement the SISIC project. This collaboration aims to enhance Rwanda’s standardization capacity and capabilities.
12. Partnership with FITI Testing and Research Institute
Additionally, RSB signed an MoU with the Korean FITI Testing and Research Institute to advance quality testing and knowledge sharing. This partnership is expected to bolster Rwanda’s testing capabilities and promote best practices in standardization.
2024 was a transformative year for Rwanda, marked by strong collaborations and partnerships that support the country’s socio-economic transformation agenda. The RSB’s initiatives in standardization not only enhance product quality and safety but also position Rwanda as a leader in the region. As stakeholders look forward to 2025 and beyond, the focus remains on strengthening ties and achieving even greater milestones in the realm of standards and quality assurance.
