Climate Change: National Tree Planting Season Launched

Rwanda has launched a National Tree Planting Season to combat climate change and its repercussions during an event that took place on October 26th during Umuganda Community Work in Rwamagana District.

The Rwanda Ministry of Environment, Dr. Valentine Uwamariya, officially launched the 2024-2025 National Tree Planting Season in Rwamagana District during Umuganda Community Work, under the theme “Plant a Tree, Nurture It, and Save the Planet.”

Rwanda has celebrated Tree Planting Day since 1975 to combat erosion, preserve the environment, expand forest cover, and meet global demands.

Since then, things have changed as climate change continues to impact the planet through floods, droughts, and other disasters worldwide. To combat it, Rwanda, as well as other countries, needs strong measures, including the planting of more trees.

Although Rwanda is already covered by forests to the extent of 30%, more actions are still needed. The Rwanda Ministry of Environment plans to plant almost 65 million trees this season, which include fruit trees, ornamental trees, native trees, and forest and agroforestry plants.

Addressing the population, Dr. Uwamariya emphasized that more investment in research is needed to lessen reliance on biomass and prevent deforestation. Investing in high-quality seeds that are resilient to climate change, value addition to forest products, alternative renewable energy sources, new and innovative technologies, and much more is essential.

The Minister of Environment expressed her gratitude and acknowledgment to Rwamagana District, One Acre Fund Tubura, Enabel, ARCOS Network, IUCN, Delagua, Prime Insurance, and MTN, which were among the public organizations and partners for their invaluable role and contribution to the event.

The Embassy of Israel in Rwanda also donated fruit tree saplings for planting during the event.

Dr. Uwamariya concluded by restating the Ministry of Environment’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders and other interested parties to mobilize funds and tackle sector priorities. She also invited everyone to participate in tree planting and maintaining trees to help fight climate change and protect the planet.
