A transformative journey began a couple of weeks ago, on December 20, 2024, in Nyakinama-Muko Sector, Musanze District, with the launch of the “Cultural Evolution: Empowering Community through Human Sciences and Sustainable Tourism” project at the Red Rocks Cultural Center. Supported by UNESCO, this initiative seeks to intertwine cultural preservation with sustainable economic development, breathing new life into the community’s rich heritage.
The project kicked off with an engaging training session last week, on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, bringing together a diverse group of 97 participants—37 from the Nyakinama community, 48 from Kinigi, and 12 from Bisate. All eager to learn and grow, these individuals embarked on a collaborative exploration of their traditions and how they can be integrated into sustainable tourism practices.
Nahimana Ferdinand, a youth representative from Kinigi, expressed his newfound perspective: “I’ve always admired our culture, but I never imagined it could be a source of income. This training has opened my eyes to how our dances, crafts, and stories can attract people from around the world. Thanks to the Red Rocks Initiative for Sustainable Development.”
The Red Rocks Cultural Center buzzed with energy as participants engaged in interactive sessions, covering topics from traditional dance preservation to eco-tourism strategies.
For Muhawenimana Pauline, a mother from Nyakinama, the training represented more than just education; it was an opportunity for connection and empowerment. She stated, “We’re learning how to pass our traditions to the next generation while creating opportunities for ourselves. This project is giving us hope.”
Greg Bakunzi, the Executive Director of the Red Rocks Initiative for Sustainable Development, highlighted the program’s potential impact: “This story of empowerment is only just beginning. This program promises to transform 100 people from the Nyakinama community and beyond. It shows that when culture meets innovation, communities can thrive. I am so excited for the next sessions.”
As the sun set on the first day of training, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and enthusiasm. For the Red Rocks Initiative for Sustainable Development, this marks the beginning of a significant journey toward cultural preservation and community empowerment.
The UNESCO-supported training emphasizes the critical importance of viewing cultural heritage as a dynamic, living aspect of community life. By merging these traditions with tourism, the program aims to empower locals to lead economically sustainable lives while sharing their vibrant history with visitors. This initiative not only preserves the past but also paves the way for a prosperous future, where culture and innovation coexist harmoniously.
